What happens if a name on my tax return doesn't match the right social security number?

This is a growing problem, as the IRS uses computers to match records with the Social Security Administration.   A mismatch will hold up processing of your tax return, and your refund.  We recommend that you CAREFULLY compare the social security card of everyone on your return (you, your spouse, any dependents), with the names and numbers as they appear on the return.  Correct any differences on the next return you file.  Individuals who marry and adopt a spouse’s last name should notify the Social Security Administration of the change.
